4 Benefits of Using Wire EDM for Production Parts

Have you heard the rumors about Wire EDM? There’s a myth out there that Wire EDM is a slow process, used exclusively for one-off projects or highly complex parts that are difficult or impossible to manufacture any other way. While it’s true that EDM is ideal for these use cases, we hate to see it pigeonholed so unfairly.

The truth is that Wire EDM is an incredibly versatile manufacturing method that’s useful for a wide range of projects—yes, even those with high production quantities!

Why Use EDM for Production Parts?

Here are 4 benefits of using EDM for parts with high production quantities:

  1. Runs unattended. Any manufacturing method capable of running lights-out is worth considering for your high-volume project. EDM machines can run 24/7 without human intervention, allowing for fast production. Even if the wire breaks, the machine will automatically remove it from the part and replace it with a new one to keep production moving seamlessly.

  2. Cuts multiple parts simultaneously. At Arbiser Machine, we set up our Wire EDM machines to cut up to 50 parts at once, dramatically reducing the time spent per piece from as many as 10 minutes to a few seconds. Imagine cutting 20 parts in a single stack and having 100 stacks set up in the machine to run autonomously. We’ll do the simple math for you: You get 2,000 parts that can be cut without additional labor costs.

  3. Replenishes tooling frequently. Precision machining tools wear down gradually and may not be replaced often, diminishing part consistency. The wires in EDM machines wear down quickly, which may seem like a disadvantage—but the opposite is actually true. Because the tooling wears down rapidly, the wires in an EDM machine are designed to be replenished constantly—meaning you get the freshest cuts possible to ensure exceptional consistency.

  4. Minimizes secondary operations. Wire EDM produces parts with such smooth surface finishes that secondary operations are rarely necessary. Forgoing processes like grinding can make a big difference in lead time for production parts.

EDM can be an excellent alternative to CNC machining services, metal injection molding, laser cutting, or 3D printing for production quantities ranging from a dozen to several thousand pieces. Partnering with a precision machine shop that specializes in this capability will allow you to take advantage of its many benefits beyond the standard use cases.
